Acoustic Insulation: Overview

Revisions to Approved Document E
To address the increased noise levels suffered by occupants of multi-storey dwellings, the Government has revised Approved Document E.

What does Part E require?
Separating floors now have to be constructed in such a way as to achieve the sound insulation values as detailed in Table 1.

What methods of compliance are there?

PCT - Pre-completion testing: This method of compliance requires the contractor to test 1:10 units that are not built to a robust detail. Tests must be carried out by an accredited acoustic engineer and the structure must achieve the minimum acoustic standards detailed in Table 1.

RD - Robust details: This method eliminates the need for continual testing. Contractors can select from a number of rigorously tested approved robust constructin details. Each unit that adopts the detail must then be registered with Robust Details Limited, tel 0845 678988.

YELOfon HD10+ is a non-cross-linked, high density polyethylene foam roll, which works in conjunction with E-strip perimeter up-stand anti flaking strip, and is the ideal resilient layer to satisfy the requirements of Part E when used to insulate concrete floors with a floating screed.

YELOfon Battens are timber battens with a strip of 10mm YELOfon cross-linked, flexible polyethylene foam bonded to the underside.  They have been rigorously tested to ensure compliance with Part E and are RD compliant when used as a resilient layer to reduce impact sound transmission through concrete floors with a timber floating floor treatment

YELOfon CHiP is a composite acoustic floor board made up of 10mm YELOfon cross-linked, polyethylene foam and P5 tongue and groove chipboard to produce a floating floor treatment (FFT) that conforms with the stringent requirements of the Robust Details.

FIBREfon is a unique panel made from recycled cellulose and flax without chemical additives or adhesives which has an exceptionally high acoustic performance

FIBREfon CHiP combines the benefits of FIBREfon with P5 tongue and groove chipboard to produce the ideal acoustic floor board that exceeds the demanding requirements of Part E and the Robust Details.
